About Being a Writer

When I dived off the ten meter board into the publishing world a few years ago, I had no real experience in commercial publishing. In fact, I’m still finding my way to some of those dark or hidden corners of the pool. I do know how to float and can do the backstroke until exhaustion overcomes me, though. Two strokes forward, three back. It’s called a learning curve.

Until that late autumn day in 2008 I knew only that I was a writer, that life had never dimmed that reality, but instead had gathered the material from which I could draw essays, stories, poems, etc. My goal  has revolved around that pool of experience and interest, an interest in sharing lessons learned, fascinating oddities, experiences to which others can relate.

I’ve written and published children’s literature, poems, essays, op-ed pieces, interviews with other writers and artists, travel articles, and a plethora of other short works for publication. I thoroughly enjoy freelancing.

December, 2011 marks my debut into the international poetry set with the release of “Prompted: An International Collection of Poems,” in which I have three poems. I was so glad to see it’s release. The poets involved in the project have arranged for all proceeds from it’s sales to be gifted to the LitWorld charity which promotes literacy around the world.

Currently I’m working toward completing a full length book of poetry, a women’s mystery novel, a YA fantasy novel, and a book of inspiration for women.

My interests are varied and complicated, for which I’m grateful. Such things keep my life moving forward and ensure that I’m engaged in living.

I enjoy getting new friends as much as writing.

My philosophy on writing follows Enjoy.

*  *  *  *

We who write do so for a multitude of reasons. But when you get right down to it, writing is simply another way to confirm the fact that we’re living and breathing on Planet Earth and have a voice with which to say something.

Many of us do a terribly good job of saying what we feel the need to share. Others only moderately so. Still more don’t talk very well, either.

Why should we feel apologetic for what we write? someone asked me one day before I’d taken a true leap into the industry. I’m sure I didn’t have a clue how to answer that adequately. All I could do was shake my head and looked stumped. The action did seem to satisfy, though.

I don’t have lots of answers to the more esoteric questions. I have plenty of questions of my own that require a few, though. If you think you might be able to give an answer, please feel free. It’s a bit like Jeopardy around here. Go ahead and throw in those, “Alex, what is…”  answers whenever the whim moves you. I’m sure to have a question for it.

Remember, it isn’t the questions that get you in trouble. It’s the answers. Why? you ask. I’ll tell you. One answer allows for the possibility of yet another or more questions. It provides the perfect opportunity for the infinite loop to take up residence in a mind near you.

Well, that’s it. That’s all I’m willing to go into tonight. Stop by again and see if you can squeeze another tiny bit of insight from the words carried within this blog. You might be surprised. Then again, I hope you will never be disappointed.

Take care and God bless.

I wouldn’t mind creating a post or elaborating on most of the subjects you write in relation to here. Again, awesome weblog!

With having so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright infringement? My blog has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my permission. Do you know any methods to help prevent content from being ripped off? I’d genuinely appreciate it.

I don’t particularly worry about it. In truth, there’s little anyone can do about pirating or plagiarism online. All the posted warnings in the world won’t stop any of it in the end. If I want something fully covered by copyright, I don’t post it online. I submit it to magazines who will fight for my rights easier than I could. They have lawyers on retainer for that sort of thing.

Unless you have the money to file copyright papers for batches of content, you must, I think, trust that the most important thing you can do to safeguard your intellectual property is submit it only to protected arenas.

Hope this opinion helps in your search for risk-free posting.

Occasionally I have those who repost my blog for a variety of reasons. I’m credited with it, as a rule. I don’t not of any way to truly safeguard your information, concepts, thoughts, etc. on the internet. People will use as they like. It seems to be part of human nature now.

I must cultivate an attitude that says, if people will steal my stuff here, they gather only words which their own minds have not given them. I’ve already created them. I put them out for others to read. I cannot put locks on these doors, not point fingers at those who might take my words for their own use. The Universe gave me the words. I’m just passing them along.

I don’t have to like it when others claim my thoughts. I have only to understand that for some they feel a need to do this.

I’m sorry I can be so little help to you in this question of plagiarism.
